Learn to fly at Alnwick Castle

Join our resident wizarding professors and take part in one of our famous Broomstick Training sessions, on the very spot where Harry had his first flying lesson in the film production of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

How do I take part?

Broomstick Training sessions last approximately 25 minutes and take place at various times daily. For a full list of times for your visit, please check our 'What's On' boards on arrival.

Sessions are free with your entry ticket, but require a free time-slot ticket. On quiet days (such as english school term-time and weekends) time-slot tickets will be available from Artisans Courtyard. On busy days (such as bank holiday weekends and english school holidays) time-slot tickets will be available from the professors delivering the sessions. Please check on your arrival the location to collect these tickets.

Broomstick Training is extremely popular. Tickets are first-come, first-served, with a maximum of 10 tickets per session being allocated and so are very limited, particularly at peak times of year such as school holidays. We recommend arriving at Alnwick Castle as early in the day as possible and collecting your tickets straight away to avoid disappointment.

Groups of 14 or more should contact Alnwick Castle in advance should they wish to take part in Broomstick Training. The option of booking a lesson in advance is available to groups should they wish to reserve a specific time slot, subject to availability.

As Broomstick Training takes place outside the activity is weather permitting. If our runway becomes too wet and slippery to allow the session to commence, a photo oppotunity will be offered in Artisans Courtyard at various time throughout the day.

What does it involve?

Our professors will use their unique skills to teach every class the basics of mastering a broomstick.

Learn to mount and dismount, corner and manoeuvre, and accelerate and decelerate, all with the professors' expert guidance!

Such is the demand to participate in our lessons that if you are late your place may be offered to another visitor. To avoid disappointment please arrive five minues before your session is due to start.

Who can take part?

We welcome any trainee flyers who are excited and willing to take part in a lesson. If you're a fan of the Harry Potter novels or film series this is the activity for you.

There is no age limit for broomstick training - anyone can participate.

During peak times of our season tickets do go very quickly. We kindly ask that parents and guardians watch the session rather than participate with their children, which is just as fun; and only take tickets if you can attend the time-slot. If you are more than 10 minutes late for your session the professors will invite those without a ticket to take part.

Will I be able to take a photo like this?

Of course! Once you have completed the session, you will be able to take photos of your take-off to amaze your friends and family.

How to do it is a closely guarded wizarding secret, but for all those who pass the training, our professors will reveal all...

Once you have your pictures, make sure to share them with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram!
